In his book "Worlds Before Our Own," Brad Steiger suggests that the ancient Peruvians may have invented ballooning. In 1690, a Portuguese Jesuit priest recorded that he had actually seen the Peruvians flying about in hot-air balloons.
I also just saw one of those discovery or history channel shows--they actually made a balloon type thing to see if the nazsca lines could have been viewed that way. Although I think they were probably meant as a labyrinth, they showed that a balloon could have been made by the peruvian ancients.
